The Polo lounge, located in the Beverly Hills Hotel, has been a favorite for lunching socialites and Hollywood locals for generations. The lush dining room features massive booths surrounded by dark green and cream-striped walls, while the delightful patio is surrounded by flowering vines and pink archways. Canelé’s pedigree will impress those on both the east coast and the west, with Chef Corina Weibel hailing from Campanile and Lucques, and General Manager Jane Choi hailing from Balthazar and Pastis in New York City. Together, they have created a charming and intimate space, where simple, unfussy bistro food and a reasonable and carefully selected wine list team up to offer guests a flavorful respite. Think comforting dishes such as roast chicken with sweet corn, potatoes, and summer squash; seared beef tenderloin with bordelaise sauce, pommes frites, and creamed spinach; and salt-roasted branzino with parsley, celery salad, and capers. While they don’t take reservations, this neighborhood bistro is one spot not to miss, whether or not you live in the neighborhood.

XIV

XIV is the latest (and “fourteenth”) restaurant project from gifted chef Michael Mina. The unique New American menu offers a la carte selections but is more readily recognized for its signature tasting menu where you can mix and match from a medley of 35 small bite-sized portions. This serving style is meant to promote a “social dining” experience and allows for countless sampling variations. Illustrious designer Phillip Starck has decorated the interior of XIV with traditional European château accents contrasted with clean contemporary elements. A popular outdoor patio boasts a marble-clad bar, ivy-cloaked trellis, and fanciful wheelbarrow-shaped chairs.
