Border Grill Restaurant
Restaurant Review
Veterans of the Los Angeles dining scene since 1981, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger have garnered national acclaim and multimedia stardom with their modern approach to Mexican cooking. Throughout their ascension, the duo has managed to keep their Santa Monica flagship vital. A magnet for both tourists and locals, Border Grill showcases colorful murals and plentiful portions of equally vibrant Mexican cooking. With encyclopedic menus and daily specials, ordering can be daunting, but regardless of the selection, the dishes are consistently flavorful. The duo’s attention to detail lasts through dessert, with house-baked cakes and strong, spice-infused café de olla.

Title: | Border Grill |
I was eagerly anticipating my South-West dining experience amidst the flurry surrounding this Santa Monica establishment. I was drawn by the owner’s presence on Iron Chef, their prepared meals at Whole Foods, and a pleasant review in Frommers LA guide. I sat perched at the bar scouring the menu for delicious unique fare. The $9 guacamole and, trying to hard to be whimsical, atmosphere immediately turned me off. As I perused worthy choices I noshed on a wonderful trio of salsa ranging in flavors, heat, and texture. I settled on my choice for dinner and was persuaded into a Pomegranate lemonade to wash things down. Pure pomegranate has a unique striking flavor which was lacking from the burgundy tinged lemonade. The food arrived in generous portions and was good but not great. I asked to extra tortillas to soak up the beans and sauce....extra $$. I was out the door for under $30.00 and was wishing I had settled on a burrito truck instead. With the ethnic variety offered in the greater Los Angeles area, I was expecting a little more. Perhaps the Chefs/owners have lost touch in the efforts to expand their empire.
