Ocean and Vine
Address: 1700 Ocean Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90401
Opened in March 2005, Ocean and Vine is located in the gorgeous Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, next to Santa Monica pier. The swanky lobby sets the scene for an upmarket experience. The split-level, low-ceilinged room is attractive; the top level is dominated by a steel chimneyed fire pit, with striking artworks adding to the ‘wow’ factor. The cuisine, from Head Chef Robert Trester under the watch of Executive Chef Gregg Wangard, is Californian; each dish a showcase of local, seasonal ingredients. Dishes are near-faultless, and although prices are high, it’s worth coming here for a splurge or special occasion.

Downey's
Address: 1305 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101
Seeming light years away from the hustle and bustle of the collegiate/tourist-filled South State Street is an unsuspecting Cal-French local favorite: Downey’s. For 25 years, Owner and Chef John Downey has managed to sustain rave accolades amidst a completely unlikely environment. Yes, the esteemed apex of Santa Barbara restaurant folklore is all but hidden in secluded Mid-Town State Street. More surprising is that once inside, Downey’s is completely void of aesthetic trickery to the point of intrigue. It is evident: John Downey is from the school of substance over style.

Literati II
Address: 12081 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90025
Building on the success of casual Literati Café, Tony Kouba and wife Paty opened Literati II next door in March 2005. Chef Chris Kidder, a long-time believer in seasonal cooking, delivers the couple's vision for a market-inspired neighborhood restaurant. The literary-themed interior celebrates writers, with portraits of authors and hardcover books ingrained in the structure. Chef Kidder prints a new menu daily, based upon what he scores at the market, but always includes crisp-skinned rotisserie chicken, his signature pork chop, and burger. Chris’ wife, pastry chef Kim Sklar, contributes desserts like churros with bittersweet chocolate dipping sauce.
